Fuseboard upgrades

Most properties are fiited with the older style fuse wire which wont give the same protection as a RCD(residual current device) protected modern consumer unit, an RCD is a life-saving device which is designed to prevent you from getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire. It can also provide some protection against electrical fires. RCDs offer a level of personal protection that ordinary fuses and circuit-breakers cannot provide.

Most homes are also fitted with a plastic consumer unit where as the new style of consumer units available to buy are made from non combustible material(i.e metal). Regulation 421.1.201 of the BS:7671 IEE Wiring regulations was introduced in january 2016 and comes into affect 1st july 2016 because of reports from fire investigators of a recent trend of increasing numbers of fires involving consumer units having a moulded thermoplastic enclosure. The cause of the fires investigated was almost invariably found to be resistance heating as a result of poor electrical connections due to poor workmanship or lack of maintenance. The intent of Regulation 421.1.201 is considered to be, as far as is reasonably practicable, to contain any fire within the enclosure or cabinet and to minimise the escape of flame.
